I wanted to produce work that was absent of worldly objects as these distracted the mind away from internal reflection. In his definitions of beauty Kant defines ‘dependant beauty’ as representational and therefore its content and function being referred to first. I felt my camera was restricting me to this dependent beauty as it could only ever copy and reproduce the land, referring viewers to objects and location. However, Kant also outlined ‘free beauty’ which is not only found within nature, but also perceived without conceptual thought, “The purest examples of beauty are therefore ‘free’. Only in contemplation of such examples are our faculties able to relax entirely from the burdens of common scientific and practical thought, and enter into that free play which is the ground of aesthetic pleasure” (Scruton 1982: p.87). Thus, by creating ‘non-representational’ photographs I hope to produce images detached from the real world, though I do not want this detachment to separate the viewer from image, but to allow a deeper engagement. I want the pure colour and shapes to be fully embraced, functioning to correspond to an inner state.

Inscapes.
